How Many External Displays Does Your MacBook Support?

Apple documents a per-chip cap on external displays, from one on a base M2 MacBook Air to four on an M4 Max, and OVERAY DESK adds up to five virtual monitors in VR on top of it.

How Many External Displays Does Your MacBook Support?

And How to Add More Screens in VR

The number of external displays a MacBook supports is set by its chip. A base M1 or M2 chip supports one. A base M3 supports one with the lid open, or two with it closed. M4 and M5 support two alongside the built-in screen. Apple publishes the supported configuration for each generation.

OVERAY DESK is now available on macOS. Connect an Apple Silicon Mac to a Meta Quest, PICO, or Galaxy XR headset to create up to five virtual screens without adding physical monitors to your desk. The Mac Host app requires an M1 chip or later and macOS 14 or later.

How Many External Displays Does Each Apple Silicon Chip Support?

Maximum native external displays on Apple Silicon MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, as of 2026:

ChipMaximum Native External Displays
M1 or M21
M31 with the lid open, or 2 with the lid closed
M4 or M52
M1 Pro, M2 Pro, M3 Pro, or M4 Pro2
M5 Pro3
M1 Max, M2 Max, M3 Max, M4 Max, or M5 Max4

These are maximums. The supported resolutions and refresh rates vary by model and by the combination of displays in use. Desktop Macs such as the iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro have their own configurations.

Can a Hub or Dock Increase the Display Limit?

No. A compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt hub can route several display connections through one port, which simplifies cabling, but the Mac still supports the same total number of displays.

Two other options do add screen space, and both work differently from a standard dock.

DisplayLink docks and adapters send display data over USB instead of relying on the Mac’s native video outputs, which is how they drive more physical monitors than the Mac supports natively. On macOS they require the DisplayLink Manager app and Screen Recording permission, which lets the software access the pixels it needs to render the display and send them over USB. DisplayLink states that the screen content is not stored or recorded. The cost is compatible hardware, extra software, and more cables.

Sidecar uses an iPad to extend or mirror the Mac desktop, wirelessly or over USB. You can switch to another iPad app, though the Sidecar session pauses until you return. It adds one portable screen if you already own an iPad.

Closing the lid adds a second external display only on base M3 models, and only with an external keyboard, an external mouse or trackpad, a supported macOS version, and a power connection. On M4 and M5 it changes nothing, since those already drive two external displays while the built-in screen stays active.

What Virtual Monitors Change

OVERAY DESK creates its screens in software and streams them into the headset instead of connecting each one through HDMI or Thunderbolt. Each virtual monitor works as an extended desktop with its own apps and windows rather than a mirror of the built-in display, and each one can be resized, curved, repositioned, or removed on its own.

Because they need no additional display connections, the five virtual screens sit alongside whatever physical displays your Mac already supports. A base M2 MacBook Air is limited to one native external monitor, and it can still build a full multi-screen workspace in VR.

Physical and virtual monitors are not identical in practice. Image quality, responsiveness, and the useful number of screens depend on the Mac, headset, connection, resolution, and workload. What virtual screens offer is flexibility: a larger workspace without a larger desk.

How to Use OVERAY DESK on a Mac

Setup follows the same process described in How to Use a Laptop as a Multi-Monitor Workspace in VR:

  1. Install OVERAY DESK on a Meta Quest, PICO, or Galaxy XR headset.
  2. Download and install the OVERAY DESK Host app on your Mac.
  3. Complete the initial Mac registration.
  4. Connect to the Mac from inside VR.
  5. Add and arrange the virtual screens.

The Mac Host app requires macOS 14 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac with an M1 chip or newer. Macs with Intel processors are not supported. The workflow itself is the same on Windows and macOS: connect the computer, add the screens you need, and arrange them in VR.

You can start from a prepared layout and then adjust each screen by hand. Quick Setup vs. Precise Control explains how presets and manual placement differ, which matters more once the workspace passes two or three screens.

A Practical Workspace When Your Mac Drives One External Display

The one-display limit is most noticeable on base M1 and M2 MacBook Air models, and an M3 used with the lid open sits in the same position. A working layout might be:

  • Primary screen: your editor, design tool, or main work application
  • Virtual screen 1: documentation or reference material
  • Virtual screen 2: terminal, logs, or file management
  • Virtual screen 3: Slack, Discord, or email
  • Virtual screen 4: a preview, dashboard, calendar, or media window

Instead of cycling through full-screen apps or splitting one display into narrow columns, each part of the workflow gets its own space, and the layout travels with the MacBook to a home desk, a temporary office, a hotel, or a café.

A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse brings this closer to a normal desktop workflow, and Pairing a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse with OVERAY DESK covers the setup.

How Does This Compare With Other Virtual-Display Options?

Apple Mac Virtual Display lets Apple Vision Pro users view and control a Mac through the headset, presented as a single virtual display in Standard, Wide, or Ultrawide. When several physical displays are connected to the Mac, it shows only the one configured as the main display. Wide and Ultrawide require an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 15.2 or later and visionOS 2.2 or later. Ultrawide reaches a curved 32:9, but it stays one continuous Mac display rather than several independently positioned monitors. How the VR Workspace Market Changed Between 2024 and 2026 has more background.

Immersed supports up to three virtual screens in its free Starter mode as of 2026, and Immersed Pro raises that to five with higher-resolution options and collaboration features. Our comparison of OVERAY DESK, Immersed, and Virtual Desktop covers pricing, screen count, supported devices, and workspace controls.

A permanent desk with several well-positioned physical monitors is still hard to beat: no headset, immediately visible, predictable image quality. Virtual monitors earn their place when your Mac supports fewer displays than your work needs, when the desk has no room for more, or when you move between working locations often.

FAQ

How Many External Monitors Can a MacBook Air Support?

M1 and M2 models support one external display. The M3 supports one with the lid open or two with the lid closed. M4 and M5 support two while the built-in screen stays active.

Does a Thunderbolt Dock or Hub Increase the Display Limit?

No. A hub can route several supported displays through one port, but the model’s maximum stays the same. DisplayLink docks are the exception, because they use USB graphics and the DisplayLink Manager app.

Does Closing the MacBook Lid Add Another Display?

Only on base M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, and only when the other setup requirements are met. It does not change the limit on M4 or M5 models.

Do Virtual Monitors Count Against Apple’s Physical Display Limit?

No. OVERAY DESK streams its screens to the headset instead of driving them through HDMI or Thunderbolt, so up to five virtual screens open alongside the physical display configuration your Mac already supports.

What Does OVERAY DESK Require on a Mac?

macOS 14 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac with an M1 chip or newer. Macs with Intel processors are not supported.

Where to Find OVERAY DESK
